Ductless Mini-Split vs. Central AC for Poway Homes

The real deciding factor: do you have good ducts?

The ductless-versus-central question usually answers itself once you look at your ductwork. If your Poway home already has sound, reasonably sealed ducts and you want whole-home cooling from one system, central AC is typically the straightforward, cost-effective choice. If you have no ducts, marginal ducts, an addition the system never reached, or one room that is always too hot, a ductless mini-split is often the better answer.

Both are excellent systems. Neither is universally "better" — they solve different problems, and the right pick depends on your house.

When central AC wins

Central air shines when you want uniform cooling across a whole home and the duct infrastructure is already there (or worth installing). It is usually the lower cost-per-ton for larger homes, keeps all the equipment out of sight, and pairs naturally with whole-home filtration for wildfire-smoke and dust control. The catch is that it is only as good as its ducts — leaky attic ducts in Poway's older tracts can waste 20–30% of what you cool, which is why we check and, if needed, seal ductwork as part of any central install.

When a ductless mini-split wins

Ductless systems are the answer when running or fixing ducts is impractical or wasteful. They are ideal for Poway's pre-1950s Old Poway cottages with no ductwork, for room additions and converted garages, for a chronically hot upstairs or west-facing office, and for barns, shops and ADUs. Because each indoor head is its own zone, you condition only the rooms you are using — which, at SDG&E rates, can meaningfully lower your bill. Modern inverter mini-splits are also very efficient and quiet.

Cost, efficiency and comfort compared

On cost, a single-zone ductless system is often less than a full central install, while a multi-zone whole-home ductless system can run similar to or more than central AC depending on the number of heads. On efficiency, both can be excellent; ductless avoids duct losses entirely, while central benefits from sealed ducts. On comfort, central gives seamless whole-home temperature, while ductless gives you true room-by-room zoning. Both can be heat pumps, so both can heat your home through Poway's mild winters — see our heat pump vs. furnace comparison for that side of the decision.

How we help you choose

On an estimate we look at your ducts, your layout, the rooms that give you trouble, and your bills, then lay out both options with honest numbers so you can decide. Sometimes the answer is a hybrid — central AC for the main house plus a mini-split for the addition or the hot room. There is no one-size answer, and we will tell you which fits your home rather than which we would rather sell.
